Santa Clara & San Joaquin County Homecoming parade for Thia Megia

Thia Megia, the San Joaquin Valley teen turned overnight singing star, will return to her roots Saturday and be feted by her hometown.

Thia, a 16-year-old from Mountain House who was the youngest contestant to ever compete on the TV hit "American Idol," will be in Tracy and Mountain House on Saturday for a special meet-and-greet and recognition ceremony. Tracy activities are scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. at Center Court inside the West Valley Mall in Tracy. Mountain House activities will begin at 3 p.m. at Central Park.

"We are doing this event because Thia is part of our community," said Cindy Bannister, who helped coordinate the event. "To see someone so young go so far "... we really want to support her and let her fans meet her. We would really like the public to come out and be a part of this event. This is a great opportunity to have her come to our mall."

Tracy Mayor Pro Tem Michael Maciel will present Thia with a certificate of recognition.

"Thia is certainly a Tracy area girl," Maciel said. "We are more than happy to participate and acknowledge her accomplishments."

Tracy Councilman Steve Abercrombie also lavished praise on the singer.

"Thia should be very proud of herself for accomplishing what she did and for the talent she has," said Abercrombie, who plans on attending the event. "I had the pleasure of meeting her a couple years back when she preformed in a local event. We really want to encourage Thia and

let her know that we support her. Our community is one big family."

From West Valley Mall, Thia will receive a police escort to Central Park where she will sign autographs. While at the park, Rep. Jerry McNerney and San Joaquin County Supervisor Leroy Ornellas will present certificates of recognition. Certificates will also be presented by the Mountain House Board of Governors.

"We are so pleased to welcome Thia home and congratulate her," said Celeste Farron, Mountain House Community Services District vice president. "Thia has a great future ahead of her, and we look forward to welcoming her fans."

At the Mountain House venue there will also be food vendors, BBQ, funnel cake, face-painting, a jumpy house, arts and crafts, and live entertainment.

Thia will not be performing at either event.
